Our style guide:

The Just Entrepreneurs style guide exists to provide contributors with a single reference for the format, voice and style for all Just Entrepreneurs content and, as well as clarifying contentious points of grammar and spelling.

Our Approach:

The Just Entrepreneurs approach, and subsequently, voice, is based on two fundamental principles:

  1. Just Entrepreneurs brand values

  2. Understanding our readers and delivering them maximum value

Our core brand purpose is to give our readers - pre-startups, sole-traders, micro-businesses and small businesses with fewer than 10 employees a competitive advantage by providing the advice, tools and networking opportunities they need to be successful.

Just Entrepreneurs is user-focused and its content if for the user. We write for business people.

Consequently, all of our content aims to be entrepreneurs and business owner led, researched, offering practical, insightful and accessible real-world solution to the common pain points faced by small business owners and startups. We aim to take a new, cutting edge approach to business advice and so where possible should be as forward-thinking as possible in its approach, but not at the expense of substance.

Just Entrepreneurs readers want clear, practical yet savvy business information; substance; to be inspired; to learn from others’ mistakes and the factors contributing to their success; direction to further practical advice, solutions and resources; real-life examples; sector-specific information; detail; savvy insider tips; professional guidance; to be introduced to new ways to do business; a voice which speaks to them.

Just Entrepreneurs readers do not want: generic textbook advice; jargon they can’t understand; advice they can’t act on; every witty, clever-clever copy ay the expense of quality advice; content they can’t navigate easily; content that doesn’t deliver what they were principally looking for; tied, slow, monotonous copy; content that doesn’t speak to them.

Our Voice:

The Just Entrepreneurs voice, should be relentlessly fast-paced, direct, constantly imparting new information and insight with every point.

Avoid metaphors and analogies which distort rather than add clarity. Just Entrepreneurs readers trust its content. They expect to be informed authoritatively - avoid uncertainty (such as may be, could be, perhaps) and address the reader directly as ‘you’ and ‘your business’.

Avoid jargon - explain complex terms as replaced with real-world business speak. Just Entrepreneurs style should be relaxed and free from constraints of formal or academic rule, but not to the point it loses authority or credibility. Resist becoming too familiar and using unnecessary colloquialisms.

Copy should be easily navigated and friendly to those who wish to jump between different sections - break up sections and use bullet points.

Search engine optimisation (SEO):

To ensure Just Entrepreneurs content is read by as many people as possible, some basis SEO principles should be adhered to in every piece of content published.

When producing your article, consider both the primary keywords associated with the subject of the piece and the highest performing search terms for that subject according to Google. Use Google’s Keyword Planner to research this: https://ads.google.com/intl/en_uk/home/tools/keyword-planner/

Ensure the three most prominent terms are used where possible in the article title, opening paragraph and subheadings - do not cram with keywords as this can have the adverse effect and your article will be sent back for editing.

In addition, ensure that your article uses internal and external links necessary, possible and sensible.
