Bio&Me achieves high-scoring B Corp Status
Bio&Me, created by The Gut Health Doctor, Dr Megan Rossi, BSc, PhD RD, is delighted to have been recognised as a certified B Corporation, achieving a high 95.9 B Impact Score.
Following a thorough submission process, the gut-loving business, which is on a mission to be the very best ‘good for your gut’ foodie brand, helping make looking after your gut health easy and accessible to all, was awarded B Corp status after meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. The business, which is committed to balancing profit and purpose, was commended for its Impact Business Model, which showed its determination to put people and the planet first, every step of the way.
The Chester-based start-up launched with a range of four gut-loving granolas in 2019. Since then, the range has expanded to include porridges and live yoghurts, all packed full of prebiotic goodness. Not only that, Bio&Me is the only brand to carry the prestigious EFSA-approved ‘Good for your gut’ health claim and is uniquely-placed as a multi-category business.
To be a B Corp, a firm must legally consider the impact their decisions have on workers, customers, suppliers, community and the environment by using business in a positive way and outside of shareholder profit.
Passionate about promoting sustainable and consumption and production of each and every one of its products, the past year has seen Bio&Me focus on incorporating the most sustainable packaging solutions commercially available, as well as working to reduce its carbon footprint across the whole company, putting in place a 10% reduction target in its overall carbon footprint by 2025, with an ambitious aim of 50% reduction in total emissions by 2050. In addition, in recognition of the Bio&Me team growing 325% in 2022, the business has introduced a number of core employee benefits, including a partnership with Grocery Aid to ensure the team’s wellbeing comes first.
The business was also commended for its charitable work with FareShare, the UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food waste, which saw Bio&Me donate over 20,000 products in 2022.
“After over a year of intense work and rigorous examination we are excited to be officially part of a global movement of leaders using business as a force for good, working together to create a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Being recognised as a certified B Corp business is validation that the transparent, responsible business we’ve been working so hard to create has been worthwhile,” says Jon Walsh, Bio&Me Co-Founder and CEO.
Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK says: “Being able to welcome Bio&Me to the B Corp community is hugely exciting. As a highly-respected challenger brand, their commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to other start-ups and help spread the idea that we can redefine success to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit.”
Walsh continues: “It’s not just about having the best products; it’s about behaving in a way that truly embodies ‘business for good’. Good for our consumers, good for the planet, good for our team and good for our local community. Being open and transparent is at the very heart of Bio&Me, and this B Corp certification is a seal of approval that we are meeting the highest possible standards of social and environmental performance, and our commitment to use this business as a force for good. But there is always more to be done, and we will continue to be open and transparent with our progress, and to always strive to improve.”
With its new B Corp status, Bio&Me will look to continue to raise the bar. Future plans include reducing its plastic use by a minimum of 25% in 2023, committing to giving 1% of profits to the planet, as well as donating 100% of any surplus food to FareShare.
