Heura closes H1 2022 with more than 93% YOY turnover, paving the way to spare more than 1 Million animal lives in 2022

With the mission to accelerate the plant-based protein transition, today Heura, one of Europe’s fastest-growing plant-based meat companies announced that it nearly doubled its H1 turnover, as compared to last year’s record breaking H1, and is on track to spare approximately one million animals in 2022. Founded in 2017 by food activists Marc Coloma and Bernat Añaños, the company closed H1 2022 with €14.7 million in turnover, up from €7.6 million during this period last year. With its most successful first half of the year in its five-year history, Heura has expanded its total reach to approximately 18,000 POS, up from 13,000 EOY 2021.

The first half of 2022 solidified Heura’s ability to not only outperform within the category but lead the national growth of the plant-based foods sector in Spain. Heura is now present in 65% of the retail market in Spain, making it the most widely distributed plant-based brand in the country. On a parallel path, food service grew exponentially through strategic partnerships with catering companies, including Som Valors, SERH, as well as hotel chain Iberostar.

The company has also seen unprecedented international expansion across Europe, as the independent startup with the highest number of countries in its portfolio. The UK, France and Switzerland drove rapid growth across the continent in H1, thanks to new partnerships with international retailers such as Ocado in the UK, Migros in Switzerland, Carrefour in Italy, E.Leclerc, Intermarché and Super U in France, and more.

Heura co-founder and CEO Marc Coloma said:

“The current food system is broken but we are seeing the power we all have to accelerate change. We aren’t making animal meat alternatives, but successors - foods that are delicious but also nutritionally superior and more sustainable. We have a clear roadmap for 2022 growth focused on expanding the plant-based category across Europe, and we are committed to providing better food options to people all over the world.

Being the preferred option of the consumer has been reflected in our H1 market share growth. Our  product portfolio has proven to exceed customer expectations but in order to achieve the impact we are aiming for, it’s not just about having an exemplary product and company, it's about energizing the entire agricultural and food sector to transform society. With our R&D team, the TechRebels, we are working on breakthrough novel and inventive technologies that will achieve carbon positive supply chains, bringing the entire food industry a huge step forward.”

As a company rooted in activism, Heura is also proud of the positive impact it's had on both the environment and animal welfare in H1. Over the past six months, when compared to traditional proteins, the company estimates that it has saved approximately:

  • 55,933,065 liters of water used, the equivalent of 22 olympic sized pools

  • 3,616,637 kg of CO2, the equivalent of more than 18,500 flights from Madrid to London

  • 3,589,290 m2 of land used*, 65 times the size of Camp Nou football stadium

  • More than 509,000 chickens, pigs and cows lives have been spared

With the core of its business dependent on the Good Rebel employees committed to driving positive change, Heura has grown from a team of 100 international employees at the end of 2021 to 165, located across Spain, France, Italy and the UK. A special focus has been placed on the Heura TechRebels, the company’s highly credentialed R&D team, which grew by 40% in H1.

Earlier this year, Heura raised more than €4M in just 12 hours through its crowdfunding Equity for Good Rebels campaign, which saw more than 4,500 people from across the world join together to accelerate the plant-protein transition. Breaking traditional investor norms, approximately half of the participants were between the ages of 18 - 35 years old, and 42% identified as women.

Heura H2 2022:

Thriving in the intersection between sustainability, nutrient density and culinary excellence, Heura continues its commitment to leveraging R&D to create the future-forward meat successors that appeal to a global audience. Since launching its Good Rebel Tech platform in H1, Heura’s rapidly expanding R&D team has forged global partnerships with some of the top universities in the world. The company plans to file its first patents later this year. New R&D innovations stemming from Good Rebel Tech will roll out in H2 2022.

A primary focus for the back half of the year will be international expansion, in an effort  to help democratize the food system. Currently available in more than 20 countries around the world, Heura will work to provide access to delicious plant-based foods in new markets, retailers and restaurants.
